Cross Country 2014

This year, Sullivan had a really successful cross country season! There were four races this year, and if you went to at least one, you could go to the Fraser Valley High School Cross Country Championships. Each race is split into 3 age groups- grade 8, junior (grade 9&10), and senior (grade 11&12), and each race is a different length depending on your age group. We had six junior girls, one grade 8 girl, and one grade 8 boy go to Fraser Valleys, which took place on Wednesday, October 22 in Coquitlam. At the race, the grade 8 boys and girls ran 3.4 km, the junior girls and boys, and senior girls all ran 4.7 km (which is equivalent to about 12 laps around a 400 meter track), and the senior boys ran 6.3 km. Sullivan's junior girls' team finished second in the race, with an average time of 19:44.26, and the fastest runner's time being 18:48.38. The top four runners now qualify to go to the Provincial Championships, which will take place at West Shore Parks in Victoria on November 1st, 2014.

The Canucks are now 25th out of 30 teams in the NHL. The Canucks have also recently fired Mike Gillis, who was GM and President of the Canucks, and hired Trevor Linden as their new president.

    Canada's Men's Hockey

Canada's Men's Hockey team is off to a very good start at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. They have won all three games in the preliminary round, winning 3-1 in the first game against Norway, with Carey Price in net. Roberto Luongo gained a shut out in the game against Austria, with the Canadians winning 6-0. On Sunday, the Canadians won 2-1 against Finland in overtime, with the winning goal by Drew Doughty, which put the Canadians on top of the Group B Standings with 8 points.

    GO CANADA GO! :)

    Sochi 2014 Olympics

Our Canadian Olympic team has been amazing so far- but not just in the medal count! During the men's cross-country skiing individual free sprint event, Canadian coach Justin Wadsworth's athletes had been eliminated early on, so he had gone over to the finish line to watch the end of the men's free sprint semifinals. Russian skier Anton Gafarov had crashed and badly damaged his ski, and then crashed again while going down a hill. He was at least three minutes behind everyone else, and was trying hard to finish the last couple of hundred meters down the 1.7km track. Wadsworth watched as everybody just stared, and then quickly grabbed a spare ski kit and rushed over to his aid. Afterwards, Wadsworth merely stated, “I wanted him to have dignity as he crossed the finish line."

Another act of kindness that took place was when Canadian speed skater Gilmore Junio gave up his position in the 1000m race to his teammate Denny Morrison, after qualifying for the 1000m in the 500m race, where he placed 10th, while Morrison did not. Morrison, a two-time world championship silver medallist in the 1000m, was a specialist in that event, and ended up getting the silver medal for Canada.

    This, is the Olympic spirit.

Canucks Snap 3 Game Losing Streak

The Vancouver Canucks snapped their 3 game losing streak with a win on Saturday, January 18th in a bizarre game against the Calgary Flames, winning 3-2 in the shootout. The game began with a line brawl two seconds into the game, leaving each team without four players, and only four defencemen. There were no goals in the first period, which had ended with 188 penalty minutes. During the first intermission, a furious Coach John Tortorella had to be restrained after going into the tunnel that lead to the Calgary locker room. Early in the second period, Calgary's Mark Giordano opened up the scoring on the powerplay, but not long after that Ryan Kesler tied the game at 1-1. In the third, Matt Stajan of the Flames made the score 2-1, but Yannick Weber tied it up again on the powerplay. The game went on to the shootout after a goal-less OT. After goals from Colborne and Weber, Chris Higgins wins the game for the Canucks in the fifth round, and ends their 3 game losing streak. Tortorella later apologized to the players that were on the ice at the beginning of the game during the brawl, especially rookie Kellan Lain, whose first NHL game lasted a grand total of two seconds.
